Title: Breaks Near the Motorways
AUTHOR: Hugh Cantlie
PRICE: £12.95
FINDING tasty places to eat while on the road is often hit and miss, so this book will prove a welcome addition to the glove compartment.
The pocket-sized volume features more than 200 pubs, hotels, restaurants and places of interest, largely within five minutes of motorway and some key road junctions.
The information panels also include details of places of interest nearby.
Included in the directory is Winteringham Fields at Winteringham, with directions off the M181, and with the entry: "Those of you who have always heard of Scunthorpe but never seen it, now is your chance."
The author, who points out Winteringham was the Roman crossing point from the South Bank to Brough, readily admits the 12-mile trek is a bit off the beaten track, but adds: "Well worth the additional miles."
Two other North Lincolnshire establishments featured include the Whistle and Flute and the Railway Inn at Barnetby-le-Wold - unfortunately described as Barnet-le-Wold.
Another error is the reference to the M62 crossing over the River Humber near Goole, when it should be River Ouse.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and unfortunately, with rapid turnover of ownership and tenancy of pubs, some of the details will inevitably be soon out of date.
But, despite a few errors, it provides an escape from dreary service stations.
There is even a section to make notes on places you may discover en route.
