Yes chef!

Doncaster Free Press 13th April 2009

Ready, steady, cook! A catering student has been named Chef of Year after taking part in a regional competition.
David Webb, 19, from Askern, cooked up a storm in the Association of Culinaire Francaise competition, coming top with a delicious selection of dishes.

The Doncaster College student, who turned down at job at the Ritz Hotel, claimed the North West Commis title after impressing judges with his minestrone soup and a tasty chicken dish.

David said: "It feels great to have won the competition, I can't quite believe it. There were a lot of good people competing in the competition but my dishes were slightly different to everyone else's so I'm really happy."

David, who works at a restaurant in Winteringham, was one of two students who competed in the event at Manchester College where participants had two and a half hours to prepare their dishes.

Impressive Ladley win

Scunthorpe Telegraph 3rd April 2009

WINTERINGHAM darts ace Dave Ladley has recorded a victory over world number 20, Denis Ovens.

Ladley won his preliminary match against Steve Musson, 6-5, in the PDC UK Open West Midlands Regional Final at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

After hitting double two with his last dart in the eighth leg against Ovens, to go 5-3 up, Ladley wrapped up a 6-3 win.

Next up was world number 18 Robert Thornton but Ladley lost his way and was defeated 6-1.

The £200 Ladley won for the UK Open Order of Merit after beating Ovens means that he needs just another £200 to qualify for the PDC UK Open at Bolton's Reebok Arena.

Ladley also came within a whisker of beating world number 12 Alan Tabern in the first round of the Coventry Players Championships but ended up being edged out, 6-5.

Brigg crank up the pressure in title race

Scunthorpe Telegraph 2nd April 2009

BRIGG servicemen have moved up to second in division two after thumping Black Beauty, 9-0.

They have leapfrogged Bottesford Town, as have Riley's, who moved into third after they won 4-3 at QPR.

Both sides now trail leaders White Hart by four points after Hart slipped to a shock 6-2 loss at home to Broughton Town Reserves.

It is still a one-horse race in division one after Pepperells maintained their eight-point gap at the top with a 4-1 win against Queen Bess.

Auld South Yorks are their closest challengers after they thrashed bottom of the table Poacher, 7-1.

Winteringham are a point further back in third after also winning 7-1 against HTE Burton.

Burton took the lead when Ross Belton scrambled the ball over the line from an in-swinging corner.

After the restart Winteringham upped their game and equalised within minutes when Ady Brocklesby out-jumped his marker to head against the bar. The ball landed at the feet of Lee Moulds, who wasted no time in smashing it into the goal.

Moulds was on hand to head his second of the game from a Liam Syron cross.

Kerins attacked down the right and picked out Dom Bowdler on the edge of the box, but his first touch eluded him and defender Ben Slocombe, in a bid to clear the danger, ended up blasting the ball into the top corner of his own net.

Mick Scott had to pull off a wonder save to prevent Burton pulling a goal back from a curling Nathan Watson free-kick to keep the score 3-1 at half-time.

After the interval, Winteringham ripped into Burton and it wasn't long before they extended their lead when Bowdler headed a Markham free-kick past the Burton keeper.

Moulds completed his hat-trick soon after, racing through and coolly passing the ball under the diving keeper from a tight angle.

Winteringham extended their lead when 16-year-old Connor Sturman was on hand to volley the ball past the keeper to score his second goal in two starts.

Winteringham rounded off the triumph when the ball dropped to Bowdler 30 yards from goal and he swung it into the top corner of the net, leaving the keeper no chance.

In division three, Crowle Keys beat Trinity, 3-2.

With 10 minutes of the first half remaining Trinity took the lead when Rick Camplin timed his run from midfield to strike a rare goal.

Following the half-time break, Trinity lost their way and with 15 minutes left were 3-1 down following several examples of poor defending.

The game was kept alive for the last 10 minutes when Chris Harper gave Trinity hope, but to no avail.

Janney's Allstars took over at the top with a 5-0 defeat of Queensway, leapfrogging Baysgarth Old Boys, who lost 3-2 away at Barnetby.

Lincoln Castle were victorious in their division four clash against Fender Talbot, winning 3-2 to move five points clear of their title rivals.

Valley View's lead at the top of division five was cut to four points when they surprisingly lost 1-0 to Winteringham Reserves, with Karl Hull scoring the vital goal.

Black Beauty Old Boys could not fully take advantage of the slip though because they were held to a 4-4 draw by Bevers Joinery.
