Leisure projects get cash boost
Scunthorpe Telegraph Friday 15th August 2008
Almost £80,000 is to be poured into leisure facilities in North Lincolnshire towns.
The grant aid will boost facilities in Kirton in Lindsey, Winterton and Winteringham.
It will also support a group of disabled adults at next year's Special Olympics in Leicester and a festival of music in Gunness.
The money is being provided by North Lincolnshire Council to boost leisure facilities in the towns.
The grants are:
£30,000 towards refurbishment of Kirton's town hall, including disabled access and a community heritage centre
£21,955 for phase two of the Winteringham village hall
£20,000 for new floodlights, a treatment room and disabled access at Winterton Rangers Football and Social Club
£5,150 for a refurbishment of Whitton village hall, including disabled access and energy efficiency improvements
£1,000 to support the Gunness Festival of Music and Fun
£1,000 for a North Lincolnshire combined gateway to the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Leicester in June 2009.
Gunness festival organiser Dave Oldfield said the cash would help out with the running of the four-day event.
"It is the first time we have applied for a grant and we are happy to have North Lincolnshire Council on board," he said.
And Jenny Cripps, the vice-chairman of the Kirton Town Hall trustees, said the money would be helpful in helping them raise cash for the new hall.
"Without the £30,000, we would find it very difficult to raise the money for the match funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund," she said.
"The council's contribution plays a very important part."
Winterton FC's chairman, Dave Crowder, said the extra funding would support other projects.
He said: "It's all about community and maintaining the facilities. It's a very sound investment for the town."
Coun Christine O'Sullivan, cabinet member for leisure and culture, encouraged people to apply for the funding.
"The scheme is hugely beneficial to many people - not least as it enables their projects to get off the ground and enables budding sporting stars of the future to compete at national and international events," she said.
"I would encourage people to apply for the funding. It is there to be used for worthwhile projects, so make sure you don't miss out."
