Winteringham stretch run thanks to Kerins' goal

Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 11th December 2008

THE weather wreaked havoc in the Sunday League last weekend, but Winteringham stretched their unbeaten run in the league to five games thanks to a draw against HTE Burton.

Winteringham dominated the first half, but were unable to convert a host of chances.

Liam Syron and Robbie Parker caused problems down the wings, while Lee Moulds and Nathan Kerins proved a handful up front.

However, Burton broke the deadlock when the visitors suffered a momentary lapse in concentration.

Winteringham upped the tempo after the break.

Moulds hit the bar and Dan Hubbard forced the keeper into a good save from a free-kick.

Finally, the away side found the net when Kerins slotted the ball past the Burton keeper from inside the area.

Winteringham continued to press for a winner that would move them up to second in the table, but Burton remained a threat on the counter-attack. The hosts' striker hit the woodwork in the last five minutes.

Visitors make a point to champions

Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 4th December 2008

PEPPERELLS - the current league and county champions - hadn't dropped a point in a league game for over 18 months, until they played Winteringham on Sunday.

The match started at a fast pace and Winteringham struggled to get a real grip of the game in the early stages.

With neither side creating much early on, it was more of a battle for possession - with some tasty tackles flying in.

Nathan Kerins thought he had broken the deadlock midway through the first-half for Winteringham but his cool finish was ruled out for offside.

To add to their disappointment, Pepperells went up the other end and scored almost immediately.

Winteringham failed to clear on the edge of the box and the ball fell to Mark Anderson. He struck a shot goalwards which deflected through a crowd of players into the bottom corner of the net.

Winteringham were awarded a penalty when Kerins' cross into the box was handled by a Pepperells defender and Lee Moulds stepped up and blasted the ball past the Pepperells keeper.

Pepperell's Alex Harle was shown his second yellow card of the game soon after and was sent from the field after an off the ball incident involving Kerins.

After the restart it was more of the same, good solid tackling and a battle for possession, with Pepperells wanting time to get their free-flowing passing game going and Winteringham determined not to allow them anytime on the ball.

Pepperell's had a 20 minute dominant spell but failed to find a winning goal.

Winteringham got a number of half chances in the closing stages of the game, but were unable to really test the Pepperells goal keeper and the 1-1 draw was a fair result in the end.
