Royal sculptor's work on show
Scunthorpe Telegraph Monday 27th July 2009

A SCULPTOR who carved the Victory Crown for the Queen's coach is exhibiting some of his work in North Lincolnshire.

OH Boyd, of Horkstow, near Barton- Upon-Humber, is showing off samples of his portrait work at the Winteringham Village Hall open gardens and art exhibition event next month.

Nine other artists are taking part in the event, including Joey Richardson, who showed her fine wood-turning work in New York earlier this year.

Organiser Kay Ashberry said the event was being held to raise money for a revamp of the Winteringham Village Hall and also promote the artwork being produced in the region.

Mrs Ashberry said the hall's committee celebrated opening an extension to the community venue earlier this year.

Combining the Winteringham open gardens event with the art exhibition should help drive interest.

She said: "I tried to get as many mediums to show as possible. We have 10 artists. It's something we can build on every year.

"It's a combination of professionals and villagers' work."

Mr Boyd, who will soon have his work on display in the National Portrait Gallery, said: "Winteringham is interested in art. It couldn't be a more pleasant village. Kay is pretty dedicated."

1,800-year-old ring found
Scunthorpe Telegraph 11th July 2009

A NEARLY 2,000-year-old silver ring, found on a ploughed North Lincolnshire field, was declared to be treasure by North Lincolnshire coroner Paul Kelly.

The Roman ring was discovered by Winteringham metal detecting enthusiast Ken Jacobs on October 16, 2008.

Coroner's officer Martin Armstrong told the Pittwood House inquiry: "The gentleman was metal detecting on ploughed land. It was found in the Winteringham area."

Mr Armstrong said a report about the artefact was commissioned by the British Museum. And, he said: "The find appears to qualify as treasure."

The roman ring, which weighed 5.62 grams and is believed to be 1,800 years old, was examined by Dr Richard Hobbs, the curator of the Romano-British collection at the British Museum.

Mr Kelly recorded the ring as treasure and said his finding would be transmitted to the British Museum.

It will then be valued and the valuation amount will be divided equally between Mr Jacobs and the landowner Ron Ogg.

Mr Jacobs said: "I don't think it's of great value, I'm guessing it's about £200 tops. But it's in lovely condition," he said.
