THREAT OF SUBMERGED ROADS

Scunthorpe Telegraph, Tuesday 26th June 2007

Flooding caused havoc on the region's major roads, making some completely impassible and enforcing diversions and slow moving traffic.

A 50mph speed limit was imposed on the M180 motorway due to a large amount of standing water and the A1077, which spans North Lincolnshire, was submerged in parts.Ferriby Road in Barton-upon-Humber, as well as a number of other roads around Barton, became too waterlogged to use and countless roads in the region were plagued by deep, standing water.

Humberside Police spokesman James Cartwright said the force had been inundated with calls since the early hours of the morning and caution was advised on all roads.

"The A1077, at Barton Lane, has not been closed but there has been slippage on the embankment and approximately two feet of mud has fallen on to the carriageway."

Mr Cartwright said there had been reports of flood waters covering gardens in Brigg and South Killingholme as well as Scunthorpe and Barton.

The River Trent rose 'very high' close to Alkborough and Burton and Winterton, Winteringham and Barnetby all suffered some flooding.

"We have patrols all over the place trying to keep track of everything going on; obviously they will act when it is needed," said Mr Cartwright.

Floods also severely disrupted bus and rail services with many routes either being cancelled or diverted, including the 350 bus service, which links Scunthorpe with Winterton, Barton and Hull

HOPES HIGH LES WILL RAISE MOUNTAINS FOR CHARITY

Scunthorpe Telegraph, Thursday 14th June 2007

Mont Blanc is Europe's highest peak and scaling it is a challenge for even the most skilled mountaineer.

Few even attempt it without a guide. But Winteringham soldier Les Longworth (27) is set to climb the 4,808-metre peak unaided, despite having no mountaineering experience at all.Les, who will be accompanied by friend and former forces member Anthony Samson (32), is to tackle the tough climb in order to raise money for Cancer Research, in honour of his mother, who is currently battling the illness.

"I'm nervous, definitely, not many people try to do it without a guide and obviously I haven't climbed before, but because Mont Blanc is so high we thought it might raise more money," said Mr Longworth.

The former Winterton Comprehensive School pupil is currently stationed at Staffordshire's Army Training Regiment, but his mother, Jean Longworth, lives in Winterton.

"My mum has been fighting cancer since last Christmas and she's getting quite bad, she has breast cancer but it has spread," Mr Longworth explained.

"Obviously that's my reason for doing it, but with Anthony I think it was just a case of finding someone crazy enough to do it with me.

"We do go walking together and we're both quite fit so we should be all right. We've been putting in extra training though and we will spend three days acclimatising before the climb when we get there."

Mr Longworth has planned his mammoth fundraising event for August 5, and said the only thing which could possibly put him off would be bad weather.

"Hopefully the weather will be good - we have an extra day to make it to the top to account for being held off by the weather, but we hope to do the climb in three days," said Mr Longworth.

"A lot of friends and colleagues have already come forward and said they'll sponsor us, but we want to make as much as possible and think we might be able to get into the thousands - I'm thinking about asking local businesses for sponsorship as well."

Individuals or businesses who might be able to help Mr Longworth reach his fundraising target can contact him on 07970 053208.

HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH CYCLISTS

Scunthorpe Telegraph, Saturday 9th June 2007

A Whole fleet of four-wheeled farm vehicles on a collision course with a bunch of cyclists - you'd expect there to be only one winner.

However, even an ill-timed vintage tractor rally failed to thwart some of the top riders in the country, as amongst the Lincolnshire Wolds it was the heavyweights who were forced to give way during the East Midlands Regional Road Race Championship.Organised by Cherry Valley rider Andrew Hayton, from Winteringham, almost 60 cyclists attempted to push their physical capacity to the absolute limit over nine laps of a gruelling 9.5 mile circuit.

The challenge proved too much for some, with less than half as many making it to the finish line, as blistering heat and vertigo-inducing climbs through Binbrook, Thorganby, Croxby and Thoresway, took a heavy toll. Scunthorpe Poly's Martin Pitchford was one of the many casualties.

The opposition proved equally as tough as the terrain with a clutch of elite and first-category riders setting the pace and soon breaking away from the chasing pack.

With three laps to go Richard Wilkinson, from Rapha Condor race team, sought to go it alone up front but he was soon reeled back in and eventually found himself pushed into third place.

Taking the title, and the Simon Goodge Memorial Trophy, in a time of three hours 39 minutes, was a rider who shone in the recent Richmond Grand Prix, Dave Clarke.

He just pipped Olympic cyclist Robin Sharman in a tight sprint to the flag, with Wilkinson barely 13 seconds behind.
