School pupils scoop national award for environmental activities

Scunthorpe Telegraph 24th March 2011

GREEN-thinking students from a North Lincolnshire primary school have won a national award for their exceptional environmental work.

Spending time in the garden might not be the first thing that springs to mind when people think of children.

But the members of the Eco-club from Winteringham Primary School have proved everyone wrong by getting stuck in with the plants and flowers.

And now they have been presented with an Eco Schools Green Flag in recognition of their innovative projects.

The club, which is made up of six students, has been working hard on a variety of schemes – including a recycled greenhouse and a wildlife garden.

Eco-club leader Sarah Scott said she is very proud of all their hard work.

"The youngsters now have such a wonderful awareness of the environment, nature, wildlife and the importance of recycling," she said.

"They have also carried out a lot of work with regards to Fairtrade and they understand the benefits of Fairtrade products to people across the world.

"It is a real pleasure working with the youngsters on their variety of projects, such as the wildlife garden.

"Winning the award is absolutely terrific and it is a wonderful accolade for the school."

Eco-club member Tess Lacey-Hatton, nine, said she enjoyed cultivating the school's garden area.

"I joined the Eco-club at the start of the school year and I have enjoyed every minute of it," she said.

"My favourite thing is definitely working in the wildlife garden and I really like planting all of the flowers and plants. I now know how to care for my own garden at home.

"Being in the Eco-club has taught me so much about the environment and how we need to take care of plants and wildlife and recycle as much as we can."

At the moment, the pupils are using recycled plastic bottles to construct a greenhouse.

Jessica Darley, ten, said: "We take part in Eco-club every Monday after school. It is lovely being in the garden when it is nice weather.

"I have also enjoyed learning about Fairtrade products – especially when we get to taste the yummy chocolate."

Headteacher Lesley Allwood added: "I am very proud of the pupils and it is absolutely fantastic to win the award.

"I have to say a huge thank you to the club leader Sarah Scott who has dedicated so much time to the group and volunteer Lawrence Railton.

"Without them, the Eco-club wouldn't be possible."

Winteringham woman taking charity work to greater heights

Scunthorpe Telegraph 23rd March 2011

A WINTERINGHAM woman is taking charity work to new heights, with a sponsored climb of Mont Blanc.

Lorraine Carey, 39, is taking on Europe's highest mountain in a bid to raise cash for Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

She said: "I've always been quite sporty, but then I had two spinal surgeries. I used to do a lot of running and when I couldn't run I started walking. Then last year I went to the Alps and we did quite a lot of extreme stuff, jumping across gorges and I basically got the bug.

"And Mont Blanc's the biggest mountain in Europe, so I thought we'll start with Europe and see where we go from there."

Lorraine, who is training six days a week for the climb in June, is a volunteer with Jerry Green Dog Rescue, which is why she wanted to help the Broughton centre.

"I work there once a week and walk the dogs," she said.

"They are looking to convert a barn into a training room for the dogs, so that's what I'm looking to raise the money for."

Rosie Myers, supervisor at Jerry Greens, in Broughton, said: "We're just so grateful to her. She's really put herself out to raise money for us and the dogs.

"She's making a huge contribution to the care we can give – especially in the recession."

Scunthorpe Telegraph

MOTORISTS have been warned to expect disruption when roadworks begin on a major road.

North Lincolnshire Council will carry out work on a stretch of the A1077 to improve the surface of Ferriby Road for a distance of around 2,000m westward from Gravel Pit Lane.

But while drivers say they will welcome the improvements when they come, they have concerns about delays during the repairs.

The work should take nine days to complete between Saturday, April 9 and Monday, April 18.
