STANDARD IS 'INCREDIBLE'
Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 25th May 2006
The third day of the Scunthorpe Musical Festival saw a range of performances including brass and piano.
Standards across all categories were high, and enthusiasm from all competitors shone through. Adjudicator Andrew Hansford said he was impressed with the standard of performers.
"The standard continues to rise and rise," he said.
"All the competitors are enthusiastic and motivated."
Mr Hansford said he was pleased some competitors had gone back to enter other classes.
"We've got a different range of instruments today, and on Tuesday night we had adults, too," he added.
"We've had some very young competitors too. Everyone takes the opportunity to work hard, and it's a compliment to the performers."
And Mr Hansford added the standard was 'quite incredible to see'.
He told performers musicianship was important, and they had all performed well.
"You can go all round the world and hear the best playing with mistakes, but the musical qualities outweigh the technical difficulties," he said.
He told competitors at Frodingham Parish Hall, Church Lane, Scunthorpe, they had performed with confidence.

'UNSUNG HEROES' AT GLITTERING AWARDS
Scunthorpe Telegraph Monday 15th May 2006
Childcare provision in North Lincolnshire has been honoured at a glittering awards ceremony.
The Geest Childcare Awards, presented by North Lincolnshire Council's Childcare Development Service, honoured those who have worked and volunteered with children. There were seven categories in the awards, held at Scawby Brook's Ancholme Leisure Centre on Friday, and attended by Scunthorpe United boss Brian Laws, council leader Coun Liz Redfern and Coun Harold Osbourne, Mayor of North Lincolnshire.
Shelly Collinson, childcare development service manager, said the awards rewarded the work of childcare providers.
"They recognise the hard work childcare providers in North Lincolnshire put in," she said.
"Lots of workers are unsung heroes, and the awards reflect the standards of childcare."
Winners of the awards were delighted to receive the accolades.
The Scunthorpe Telegraph sponsored the Childminder of the Year award. Editor Jane Manning presented the award to winners Sharon and Anthony Pugh.
They said they were 'excited' by their win.
"It makes our job worthwhile," said Sharon.
And joint managers of Happy Stars nursery Clare Foster and Anita Lester said they were 'ecstatic' about their nursery of the year prize.
"The other three nurseries are very good," said Clare.
Anita added: "We'd like to thank all the parents and staff."
Ulceby Kids' Club was named Out of school club of the year. The club nearly folded three years ago during a period of hardship, manager Sharon Woods said.
"It's absolutely brilliant. We've turned it around and gone from strength to strength," she added.
Sandra Wilkinson, manager at Winteringham Under Fives - crowned Pre-school of the year - said the children were the most important part of the job.
Childcare volunteer of the year Samantha Toobey (16) said she was shocked to pick up an award.
"I don't usually win anything. I'm shocked," she said.
The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Jean Harford, from the Portage Service, who said her work was only possible because of the team of staff with whom she had worked.
"I'm absolutely thrilled," she said. "The other nominees are equally deserving. It's what they get out of it, it's all for them," she said.
Student of the year Khyrun Alam Nesa was unable to attend the awards.
Speaking afterwards, Mr Laws congratulated all the childcare providers at the event.
"You are an inspiration to everybody, and we admire the work you do," he said. "If you keep up the high standard, you will achieve everything you are striving for."
