CRACKING END TO SEASON

Scunthorpe Telegraph Wednesday 30th November 2005

Players and teams in the Scunthorpe Summer Darts League were presented with their trophies after a cracking season which ended in a play-off for the Division One title.

Seventeen teams from around the area competed across two divisions with the top honours being won by the Ferryboat Inn of Winteringham after a play off with Maple Leaf B of Bottesford. The Second Division title went to new entrants Foxhills Club with Maple Leaf A finishing runners-up.

"It has been an interesting season. The standard of the league continues to improve and on good nights the matches between First Division teams can be compared to what you see on television," said league secretary Steve Fisher.

"The Second Division continues to provide a good social evening for the less committed darts player and can be a good place to make friends, win or lose."

Dave Ladley of the Ferryboat Inn, Winteringham, recorded the most 180s in the season with 14. He shared the title for lowest number of darts for a 501 leg, 12 darts, with team mate Karl Forrington.

Mick Lidgett of the Ferryboat recorded the highest finish coming down from 164.

He said new teams were always welcome to join the league for the 1996 season which should start towards the end of April. Anyone interested should contact him by February on (01724) 276841.

Entertainment for the evening featured vocalist George Roberts.

In the First Division the teams play up to five legs of 501 in six singles games and up to three legs in Division Two. Teams also play three games of 1001 doubles.

SUCCESSES HAILED FOR CHAMPION

Scunthorpe Telegraph Wednesday 2nd November 2005

The Telegraph Champion is continuing to win victories for readers with several notable results over the past few weeks.

Organisers of a special reunion to mark the 50th anniversary of a campaign in Malaya for veterans of the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment thanked the Champion following several appeals for help. Those behind the event said they believed as many as 50 people attended the Lincoln-based event from the region as a result of the appeal.

One veteran, Tom Davies, of Winteringham, said the night had been a great success. "Thank you for your help in finding old friends of yesteryear at the reunion," he said.

He added: "It was a very eventful evening, and brought the majority of us together after 48 years. I salute you Ian - keep up the good work."

The Champion also had success in tracing a lost dog, after the beloved family pet vanished from the owner's garden in Ashdown Avenue.

Lisa Breslin and Michael Moore (both 24) were frantic after their four-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, Mace, vanished last month.

They tried everything they could to find it, and decided to approach the Champion to appeal for Mace's return.

And, within hours of publication, a Polish workman turned up at their home after reading the appeal, claiming he had bought the dog from a third party.

Their 19-month-old daughter, Parca, was particularly delighted at the return of her four-legged friend, just one day before the family was due to leave the area.

Miss Breslin said they had to reimburse the man with the £300 he claimed to have paid for Mace, but said it had been worth it.

"We are just all delighted to have him back here, he is part of the family," she said.
