Rat's race for upset futile against Queen

Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 26th November 2009

FIVE teams moved one step closer to Challenge Cup glory after some high scoring action in the third round.

Queen Bess, of division one fame, were far and away the most dominant side playing at the weekend as they swept aside seventh tier Desert Rat, 11-1, to seal their spot in the fourth round.

There was nearly a cup shock at Barnetby, where the third division home side were narrowly beaten, 3-2, by their top tier visitors, Broughton Town.

In another clash of teams two divisions apart, Pepperells secured a 3-1 win at Fender Talbot.

Brigg Servicemen beat Bridge Roofing, 4-0, while, in an all first division affair, HTE Burton were beaten 5-1 by Winteringham.

After suffering their first loss of the campaign last week, the league leaders needed a response and got just that, despite going in at the break all-square with their hosts after Gareth Barlow had placed his shot past the on-rushing keeper to give his side the lead.

But Burton came back and levelled when McCray pounced on some hesitant defending to score.

Barlow gave Winteringham the advantage once more when he headed in at the back post following a Dave Moulds flick on.

And he added a third to complete his hat-trick as the visitors moved into a comfortable position.

Nathan Kerins was next to get on the scoresheet, before Gavin Hale rounded off the scoring.

There was just one Bob Bedford Cup second round tie, but Gunness put in a five-star display to beat DNC Electrical, 5-1.

Two draws saw each of the four sides in action in division two pick up a point.

Janney's All-Stars' 2-2 stalemate with Hibaldstow Wanderers and Howden's Lodge's 1-1 draw with Broughton Reserves meant a share of the spoils for all.

In the third tier, Lincoln Castle moved within two points of top spot with a convincing 4-0 victory at Crowle Keys.

With six points separating first and second at the top of division four, Barton Broncos' 7-1 success at Queensway was vital to keep up the pressure on league leaders Ferry Road Club Reserves.

But the second-placed team have a game in hand so there could be plenty of twists and turns in the title race yet.

Ashby Star secured a 4-0 victory over their mid-table rivals Chaplin's.

In division five, MFM Academicals took advantage of a blank weekend for Bottesford Town Reserves to extend their lead at the top to four points.

That was only possible after a 4-0 victory at Appleby Wanderers.

In the other game, Bevers Joinery, with two games in hand on MFM, beat Jolly Miller 7-2 to stay eight points adrift of top spot.

Beer La Caruna made it eight wins from nine in the sixth tier with an 11-1 triumph at Coach Wanderers.

But Goxhill, in second, are keeping up the chase after an 8-3 win over Blyborough.

In the seventh tier, Atletismo secured all three points when triumphing, 4-3, over Yaddlethorpe.

Tigers triumph against beaten Beauty

Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 19th November 2009

GOXHILL Tigers roared loudest as they sealed safe progression to the second round of the Mick Stockdale Cup.

But that was only achieved after a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Black Beauty at Quibell Park.

An eight goal scoreline would expect to take the honours in the top scoring game of the day, but it was the lowest in the Mick Stockdale Cup as the three other ties all registered nine each.

Mayfair just edged out Desert Rat, 5-4, Beer La Caruna dispatched of District Rangers, 7-2, while Blyborough United were toppled 8-1 by Goxhill FC.

In the H (Nobby) Clark Cup first round, Real Ale Crown narrowly beat Jolly Miller, 3-2, with EJ Galaxy triumphing in the other game at Winteringham Reserves, 5-2.

After going behind following good early pressure from Galaxy, the home side soon levelled when Mark Bennett smashed home from close range.

And they soon found themselves ahead, Sean Stevenson netting to give Reserves a 2-1 half-time lead.

But that is where the good times ended for Winteringham as Galaxy sparkled in the second half to run away with it, their goals coming from Ben Ibrahim (2), Adam Quickenden, Kevin Stamp and Jacob Quickenden.

Fender Talbot are through to the second round of the Ireson Trophy after a 4-3 victory against Barnetby United.

The scores weren't as close in the Ted Harrison Cup first round as Priory Cobras triumphed 5-2, while Howden's Lodge defeated Riley's 6-1.

Queen Bess overpowered Brigg Servicemen, 9-2, in the Dave Ward Cup opening round.

In the other tournament, the Challenge Cup, Janney's All-Stars' 7-1 win over Chaplin's and Queen Park Rovers' 3-2 triumph at Baysgarth OB saw the victors move into the fourth round.

Despite all this knockout action, there was still a hefty league programme, with a surprise coming in the first division.

Leaders Winteringham missed the chance to extend their advantage at the top when they were beaten 2-1 by previously mid-table Broughton Town.

In division three, Howden's Lodge Reserves had to settle for a point after taking the lead against their hosts, Queens.

But the home side hit back with a Dave Gaughan strike, before Danny Boulton gave them the lead.

Queens did have a chance to seal it, but with the opportunity missed, the league leaders snatched a draw with the last kick of the game.

That was not enough to stop them from being knocked off the summit as title rivals Beacon triumphed 8-0 at home to Trinity.

The gap at the top of division four remains nine points as leaders Ferry Road Club Reserves won, 4-2, against Ashby Star, while second-placed Barton Broncos claimed three points with a 2-1 victory over CMB.

New Holland Villa are the new leaders in the seventh tier after their 5-4 win over former top spot holders Second Byte RAOB.

Sonny the spaniel wins council Enviro Award for picking litter

Scunthorpe Telegraph Saturday 14th November 2009

GREEN-minded residents who are passionate about looking after the environment were rewarded at North Lincolnshire Council's annual Enviro Awards.

A special ceremony was held on Thursday at the council's Pittwood House headquarters, with awards handed out in five different categories.

And, as reported in the Scunthorpe Telegraph, they were not all human, with Sonny the recycling wonder dog also picking up a gong in the special award category.

The springer spaniel was trained to put rubbish he has scavenged into the bin, rather than ripping it up.

The dog's owner, Sharon Smith, of Meadow Road, Scunthorpe, said: "I am chuffed to pieces for him.

"When I put the entry form in, it was a bit tongue-in-cheek because I said a box of Bonios would be nice."

Other winners on the night included Melissa Holmes, 11, and Lydia Czabaniuk, 10, who have repeatedly picked up litter around Winteringham.

They were successful in the junior category at the awards ceremony.

Lydia said: "I didn't think we would win. It's amazing.

"We have done it for two years and once every school term, we go around Winteringham."

It's a super six for the Cobras

Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 12th November 2009

THERE are new leaders in two divisions of the Fallen Hero Sunday League.

There was also a first win of the season for two teams, a first point dropped for another and a first goal conceded for a fourth team.

Winteringham have moved back to top spot in division one after coming from behind to win 3-1 at White Hart.

Dan Hubbard brought them level after a thumping free-kick from Josh Hubbard had been only half stopped by the keeper.

It was Josh Hubbard who then put his side in front before the interval, converting a cross from Gaz Barlow.

Despite being below their best, Winteringham made sure of the points when Nathan Kerins added a late goal.

The village side have replaced defending champions Pepperells at the top of the table after they dropped their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw at Queen Bess.

HTE Burton are still looking for their first victory of the campaign after being pipped by the odd goal in five at Broughton.

Second division leaders Priory Cobras made it six wins from six in a 3-2 victory against Broughton Reserves.

Baysgarth Olds Boys have maximum points after four games, but conceded their first goal of the season in a 5-1 triumph over Ferry Road Club.

At the opposite end of the table, Howden's Lodge enjoyed their first success, 6-4, at bottom of the table Hibaldstow.

Howden's Lodge Reserves stay top of division three after a real ding-ding battle with Trinity.

Twice Howden's went in front, twice they were pegged back, but finally they found an extra gear to scrape a 4-3 victory.

Beacon though look the team to be stopped in this section, stretching their 100 per cent record to six games with a single goal success at home to Gunness.

Second half goals from Danny Boulton and Helder Freire could not save Queens from a 3-2 home defeat against Lincoln Castle, who punished them for sloppy defending.

Pepperells Reserves climbed to second in division four with a 2-1 success at home to AFC Mallard.

MFM Academicals took over at the summit of division five after their 2-0 home win against bottom-placed Priory Cobras Reserves, while Winteringham Reserves won 4-1 over Kirton Rangers, courtesy of strikes from Sean Stevenson, Luke McMahon, Stu Whittam and Simon Stocks.

Goxhill climbed into second place in division six after thumping Mayfair 6-1, while DNC Electrical crashed 5-2 at home to leaders Beer La Caruna.

Honours in division seven went to AFC Epworth who moved off bottom spot with their first points of the season in a 3-1 victory against Atletismo.

Robert Holme Hall continued on their goals trail in a 7-1 triumph at Wicked Bar Wanderers, who have now dropped to bottom spot.

Mystery diner spends £23k at Winteringham Fields

Scunthorpe Telegraph Saturday 7th November 2009

A TOP North Lincolnshire restaurant was left gobsmacked after a punter forked out £23,000 for a night of fine dining.

Winteringham Fields owner Colin McGurran, 32, said it was the highest bill since he bought the complex five years ago.

And it was a that would have given billionaire diner Roman Abramovich a run for his money after the Chelsea FC owner spent more than
£35,000 on a meal for nine friends at Nello's Restaurant in New York.

Mr McGurran declined to disclose the identity of his mystery diner - other than that he was a billionaire from the North-east of England.

Mr X's bill for the night for himself and his seven guests amounted to £23,000.

He said: "When you consider we normally take £40,000 in a week, this was a night to remember!"

The restaurant boss said Mr X had booked five rooms at £200 a night two months in advance and had arranged for two sporting personalities to be flown in by helicopter from Monaco to North Lincolnshire on the day.

Mr McGurran said: "He booked our private 12-cover dining room for his guests. That was an extra £200.

"For starters they enjoyed champagne and caviar at £250 per head. The host had insisted on all male waiters serving at the table.

"The meals were £125 per head but the bill gradually soared as the guests ordered champagne and wine.

"In fact, the cellar was almost dry after we served up 12 magnum bottles of Krug champagne at £1,600 a time.

"The host showed he was well satisfied with the food, drink and service by leaving a £1,000 tip to be shared among the 42-staff at Winteringham Fields.

"It was the biggest tip we have ever received."

Winteringham through to county cup last 16

Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 5th November 2009

JUST two Scunthorpe area teams are through to the last 16 of the Lincolnshire Sunday Cup.

Former holders Pepperells charged through with a 6-0 triumph at home to Gatehouse.

And through to that stage for the first time are Winteringham who were 2-0 winners away to Gainsborough League Friendship.

It was a great scalp for Winteringham against a side that has won the competition in recent years and are normally odds-on to make it to at least the quarter-final stages.

In pouring rain and a howling gale, the visitors also found themselves playing up the hill in the first half.

But fortune smiles favourably on them after only four minutes when Nathan Kerins put them in front when he got free on the left and fired in a cross which he got slightly wrong, catching the keeper off-guard and saw the ball finish up in the back of the net.

It was then backs to the wall for long spells of the first half for Winteringham.

But though Friendship applied plenty of pressure, they created few chances, with Ady Brocklesby outstanding at the heart of the visitors' defence.

The home side did look dangerous from set plays and with the aid of the wind nearly scored direct from a corner, but it ended up blowing wide of the far post.

Winteringham defended well as a team despite a few players playing below their usual standard.

But it wasn't all defending as Gareth Barlow was posing a threat going the other way, but was unable to capitalise on a number of half chances.

In the second half, Winteringham continued to defend well, looking to hit Friendship on the counter-attack.

Kerins, Dan Hubbard and Josh Hubbard all tested the home keeper before the Scunthorpe league side struck again to make the game safe in the 80th minute.

For once, they managed to get the ball down and play and were rewarded when good inter-play between Kerins, Hubbard and Barlow produced a ball across the face of the goal which Robbie Parker, blasted into the back of the net from six yards.

Winteringham have home advantage in the last 16 against Real Ropery of Gainsborough, while Pepperells have to make the long trip to Spalding to take on Wheatsheaf and Cowbit.

Auld South Yorkshire's county cup hopes perished in an 8-4 defeat at Lincoln against Bailgate Athletic.
