Restaurant hygiene to be rated
Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 30th October 2008
A NEW food hygiene scheme to be introduced by North Lincolnshire Council will show the public instantly how an eatery rates.
Scores on the Doors will be introduced from November 10 and will give owners of food businesses a star rating.
And restaurants including Winteringham Fields, Colosseo and San Pietro have said the new rating system would label establishments to customers as good or bad, something that could have a lasting effect.
Michelle Catalano, who owns San Pietro in Scunthorpe's High Street East with her husband Pietro, said: "Within restaurants it's quite easy to comply with the rules; having a clean kitchen, clean restaurant and storing food safely.
"If a restaurant is not doing those things they don't deserve to be in business."
There are around 1,500 food premises in North Lincolnshire, which include restaurants, cafes and takeaways. The council has a duty to inspect and enforce the law in these premises to ensure that they are meeting current food safety requirements.

Winteringham bow out of cup to Queen
Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 23rd October 2008
WINTERINGHAM suffered defeat when they met Queen Bess in the second round of the Challenge Cup.
The opening goal came from a Bess counter-attack when a long through ball found the right winger, who neatly guided the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
The second Bess goal soon followed when a mix-up between centre-half and keeper gifted the Bess striker with a goal.
Winteringham were awarded a penalty when Dan Hubbard was brought down, and he dusted himself down to cooly send the keeper the wrong way.
Queen Bess reinstalled their two-goal advantage when another long ball caught the Winteringham defence square.
The second-half saw Winteringham make it 3-2 as Nathan Kerins volleyed a Robbie Parker cross into the far corner.
But Bess scored almost immediately after the re-start, again from the right hand side.
The final Queen Bess goal again came down the right as the winger ghosted past the Winteringham full-back and thundered the ball into the roof of the net for a 5-2 win.
Firm may cut jobs to slash costs
Scunthorpe Telegraph Monday 20th October 2008
INTERNATIONAL company Cemex, which has a major plant in South Ferriby, is looking at cost savings as the economy slows. The Mexican company employs about 190 people at North Lincolnshire cement plant.
It said some of the cost cutting initiatives throughout the company's global network would include budget cutbacks, capacity closures, and a reduction in the numbers employed.
Cemex results for the third quarter of 2008 show that consolidated net sales fell five per cent compared with the same period of last year. And operations in the UK experienced a 19 per cent decrease in net sales, to 446-million US dollars, compared with the same quarter of 2007.
Percentage falls in some of the other markets were even higher, with USA net sales down 28 per cent and Spain seeing a fall of 26 per cent. But some of the other areas fared better and Mexico was up 10 per cent.
Before the latest announcement Cemex was already consulting about the loss of 10 drivers' jobs at South Ferriby, out of a total of about 70 drivers.

Winteringham were playing in their re-arranged County Cup tie against Whaplode Drove and put their league woes behind them with a thumping 10-0 victory over an out-classed Drove side.
They began the game well and created some good chances in the early stages of the game but seemed to look a little nervous when the killer touch was required.
It wasn't until man of the match Lee Moulds carried on his recent good form and scored the opening goal, that a few nerves were settled.
Winteringham continued to dominate the game with Dec Marshall scoring the second goal, Moulds battling his way to the touch-line before crossing into the box for Marshall to guide the ball past the keeper.
Moulds added a third goal just before half-time when he raced into the box and drove the ball low and hard across the keeper.
They weren't done there though as they continued to pile on the pressure after half-time and were awarded a penalty, which Moulds wasted no time in blasting home to complete his hat-trick.
Moulds' fourth and fifth goals soon followed as he ran riot in this goal-fest.
The seventh goal fell to Robbie Parker. After goalkeeper Rick Watson blasted the ball clear of the Whaplode back four, Parker latched onto the clearance to coolly slot past the keeper.
Dave Moulds headed in Wally Grice's corner to score the eighth and the ninth goal came after some good work by full-back Adam Sparrow, beating two players before crossing into the box where Lee Markham's bullet header gave the keeper no chance.
New boy Nathan Kerins scored his first goal for the club, and his side's 10th, when he blasted home from five yards out to wrap up the win.

Appleby Wanderers are second in division five after winning a 15-goal thriller 10-5 against Winteringham Reserves.
It was the second game in a row Winteringham had conceded 10 goals.
Appleby took the lead early on in the first-half after two Winteringham players failed to clear a long ball which was pounced upon by the Appleby striker.
The second goal came after some fine work by the Appleby right winger, lobbing the ball over a Winteringham player's head before squeezing a shot past the keeper.
The third Appleby goal came from a penalty and the fourth goal of the game fell to Winteringham's Sean Stevenson.
Just as Winteringham appeared to be getting control of the game, a free-kick on the edge of the area was chipped over the wall into the top left hand corner of the goal for Appleby's fourth.
Two more Appleby goals followed before the break to leave the half-time score at 6-1.
After the restart an Appleby player had a shot from the edge of the area, which deflected off three players before finding the top corner of the goal.
Half-time substitute Liam Syron beat four players with ease and crossed into the box for Sean Stevenson to head past the keeper and make it 7-2.
Moments later Syron went on another mazy run and struck the ball from the edge of the area to leave the Appleby keeper with no chance.
Stevenson scored a headed goal from a corner taken by Luke McMahon and then Syron was also brought down in the area for a Winteringham penalty, with striker Stevenson coolly converting.
Appleby rounded off the 10-5 win when an Appleby player just kept the ball in play, back heeled the ball, and somehow managed to find the net.

Auld South Yorks joined them at the top of the tree after keeping their 100 per cent record intact with a 2-1 win over Winteringham, despite the losing side being on top for the majority of the game.
With Lee Moulds and Karl Hull having headers cleared off the line and both Jack Cardy and Lee Moulds striking the post, Winteringham were left to rue their missed chances.
After an Auld South opener, Winteringham soon equalised when Jack Cardy fired past the keeper for his third goal in two games.
Cardy's side took control and looked destined to score but, as the visitors kept pushing forward, they got caught on the counter, conceding the winning goal.
