Winteringham fight back in clash at top Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 29th October 2009
REIGNING champions Pepperells have leap-frogged to the top of division one in the Fallen Hero Scunthorpe and District Sunday League. They made it three wins out of three in a 2-1 score-line at home to White Hart, while the second and third-placed teams shared the points with each other. Second-placed Winteringham had to fight back from 2-0 down at half-time to preserve their unbeaten record in a 2-2 draw with third-in-the-table Auld South Yorkshire. Winteringham got away to the worst possible start with a freak own goal by defender Ady Brocklesby after just 30 seconds. With the wind at their backs, Auld South Yorkshire made it 2-0 on the half hour with a screamer into the top corner by Simon Welton – and had another effort scrambled off the line. But the second half was a different story as Winteringham, with the elements in their favour, came out with all guns blazing. Gareth Barlow quickly reduced the arrears when he cracked home his 10th goal of the season. David Moulds then crashed a 25-yarder against the bar and Adam Sparrow was just inches away with another good effort. It was not until 10 minutes from the end that Winteringham drew level when Nathan Kerins showed good composure in front of goal. Barlow thought he had grabbed a winner with a powerful header, only to see it ruled out for offside. Elsewhere in the top flight, Queen Bess made it two wins out of three with a 2-0 success at Burton, while Broughton Town collected their first points, winning by the odd goal in three at near neighbours Brigg Servicemen. In division two, Priory Cobras extended their 100 per cent record at the top to four matches with a 2-1 victory against previously unbeaten Ferry Road. Queens Park Rovers jumped into second spot after thumping Howden's Lodge 7-1. At the opposite end of the table, Rileys earned their first win with a 3-2 success against fellow strugglers Hibaldstow. Beacon made it four wins out of four in division three with an 8-1 triumph against bottom-placed DSV. But they still trail three points behind leaders Howden's Lodge Reserves who have played more games. Howden were 3-1 winners at Trinity, where they came from behind and secured the points with two goals in the last 10 minutes after Danny Barnes had netted his first of the season for Trinity, who have now lost four on the trot. Fender Talbot climbed into third spot with a 4-2 win against Gunness, who had lost only one of their previous four games. At the top of division four, Ferry Road Reserves made it a magnificent seven wins out of seven with an 8-4 triumph at Valley View. Pepperells Reserves made it four wins out of five, beating Duffs Dynamoes 3-2, while Mallard retained second spot after pipping Chaplin's 4-1, thanks to goals from Cole Borrill (2), Dean Henderson and Laurie King. In division five, EJ Galaxy proved too strong for Winteringham Reserves, winning 5-0 with a brace from Quickenden, a penalty from Mapplethorpe, a bullet header from Quibell and a low drive from Ibrahim. Bottesford Reserves moved to within a point of top spot after a narrow 2-1 victory at Kirton Rangers, while Appleby Wanderers recorded only their second win in six games by the odd goal in five at Ashby Villa. In division six, Beer La Caruna stretched three points clear at the top after beating District Rangers 5-2. Free-flowing Ferry cruise to big victory
Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 15th October 2009
FINDING the back of the net has definitely not been a problem for Ferry Road Club at the start of this season.
Unbeaten so far in division two of The Fallen Hero Scunthorpe Sunday Football League, Ferry Road have chalked up 19 goals in three games.
They added to that record by thrashing Bridge Roofing 11-4 to move up to second.
Brendan O'Callaghan, Josh Longton and man of the match Gary Phillips all weighed in with two goals in the emphatic victory.
Liam Turner, James Donnelly, Lewis Downie, Franco Di Quinto and Will Lowry also got on the scoresheet for Ferry Road.
The consolation goals for the visitors came from Ross Reed (2), Danny Aslam and Martin Henderson.
Broughton Town Reserves are level on points with Ferry Road after winning 6-1 at Riley's.
In division one, Winteringham went top on goal difference after a five-star show saw them beat Brigg Servicemen, 5-1.
The result was never in doubt once Gareth Barlow stamped his authority on the clash, scoring four times.
Adam Sparrow added to that with a penalty as the new league leaders eased to victory.
The three points moved Winteringham above Auld South Yorkshire into first after the latter was beaten 6-1 by a free-scoring Queen Bess side.
The only other match saw champions Pepperells make it two wins from two in the league so far this season with a 6-1 demolition of HTE Burton.
Fender Talbot reclaimed top spot in division three with a 4-1 win against Trinity.
DSV are still bottom though after Queens took advantage of their opponent's miserable start with a 5-0 thrashing.
Queens piled on the pressure from the off, Ciaran Pidd hitting a sweet volley to score the only goal of the first half.
But four more strikes followed in the second period, Helder Freire netting with a neat finish, Richie Ireland prodding in from a deep cross and Ben Sweeting breaking through to slot past the keeper.
Danny Boulton then rounded off the scoring for a rampant Queens side.
Chaplin's moved up to third in the fourth tier, thanks to a 12-0 humbling of Duffs Dynamoes.
Laurie King scored twice from the spot to earn AFC Mallard a point in a 3-3 draw with Ashby Star.
EJ Galaxy were also on the goal trail, beating Appleby Wanderers 9-1 to go third in division five.
Adam Quickenden hit a hat-trick for Galaxy, Jacob Quickenden and Christian Quibell both scored a brace and Ben Ibrahim and Kieran Mcloughlin each netted one apiece.
There was a six-goal thriller between Winteringham Reserves and Bevers Joinery.
Bevers raced into a 2-0 lead before Mark Smith pulled a goal back for Winteringham just before half-time.
Ant Prior played the ball through and Smith took his time to place the ball past the keeper.
Soon after the break, Bevers increased their lead to 3-1 and looked to have the game seemingly all sewn up.
But Simon Stocks pounced on a goalkeepeing error to score with his left foot and give Winteringham hope.
Captain Karl Hull then stepped up to blast a pressure penalty into the corner of the net to secure a point.
Beer La Caruna continued their 100 per cent start in division six with a 3-2 win against Blyborough. But they stay second behind Goxhill.
Second Byte RAOB are in control at the top of the seventh division after continuing their unbeaten run with a 3-2 win against Robert Holme Hall.
Desert Rat are their closest challengers after a 5-0 victory against Inter Milager.

Wicked cup win for 17-goal Bess
Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 1st October 2009
THE first round of the Challenge Cup proved an easy passage for most first division sides – three of them hitting double figures.
The one exception was White Hart who were beaten 2-1 at home by second division Ferry Road Club.
The highest score of the day was chalked-up by top flight Queen Bess who thrashed division seven newcomers Wicked Bar Wanderers 17-0.
That was six more than Brigg Servicemen who breezed to an 11-1 away triumph at fifth division Ashby Villa.
Another fifth tier outfit to suffer a big defeat were Appleby Wanderers who crashed 10-0 at first division leaders Auld South Yorkshire.
Former double winners Pepperells were given a tougher test in a 5-1 victory at Blyborough who have taken maximum points from their first three games of the season in division six.
HTE Burton had few problems coming through 7-2 at newcomers Atletismo, while Broughton Town eased past Bevers Joinery, from division five, 5-1.
But Bottesford Town were given a real struggle before scraping through 5-4 at home to lowly DNS Electrical from division six.
Winteringham had the easiest passage of all from the top flight when they got through without playing when division six opponents Coach Wanderers pulled out.
Two teams from the lower sections also reached double figures.
Second division Janney's Allstars left fifth division Real Ale Crown with a 10-0 hangover, with veteran Peter Hyke coming out of retirement at the age of 46 to get his name on the score-sheet.
And third division Beacon shone brightly to beat New Holland, from division seven, 10-1.
But it was drinks all round for sixth division Beer La Caruna after a surprise 3-2 triumph at second division Howden's Lodge.
Trinity crashed out of the cup with a crushing 7-0 defeat at home to fellow third division side Barnetby, who are still looking for their first point in the league.
Trinity were a goal down after eight minutes following a dreadful back pass and two minutes later lost skipper Graham Dixon to injury.
They were 5-0 behind by the interval and conceded two more in the closing 10 minutes.
Third division Queens pulled out all the stops to topple second division Rileys 4-1 in an exciting end to end game.
Danny Boulton opened the scoring and Rileys were left to rue missed chances before Ciaran Pidd doubled the lead before half-time.
Queens' keeper Danny Roma stood firm in the second half as Rileys pressed forward but it was James Watson who made it 3-0.
Rileys pulled one back from a looping corner, but Pidd sealed victory with his second of the game.
The young Goxhill Tigers team from division six beat MFM Academicals 4-3.
The one league game played was in division five where Winteringham Reserves opened their account with a 5-0 win at home to an under- strength Priory Cobras Reserves.
After a tentative start, the home side took command with two goals from Sean Stevenson who thought he had completed his hat-trick with a cross-cum-shot which flew into the top corner, only to be ruled offside.
John Cunningham made it 3-0 before the interval and Stevenson did manage to complete his hat-trick midway through the second half, with Andrew Pirie rounding off the scoring.
