Burton cup dreams ended by rivals

Scunthorpe Telegraph Thursday 25th September 2008

WINTERINGHAM and HTE Burton resumed hostilities in the first round of the cup with the former coming out on top with a thrilling 3-2 win.

It was the hosts, Winteringham, who drew first blood as Jack Cardy raced onto a Lee Moulds through ball before calmly slotting past the keeper.

Disaster struck moments later though as Adam Sparrow saw red for kicking out at a Burton player after a poor challenge, leaving his side to play for 80 minutes a man down.

Despite being down to 10-men it wasn't long before Cardy and Moulds linked up again, allowing the former to score his second of the game.

But there was hope for Burton just after half-time, grabbing a lifeline by pulling a goal back.

And they forced an equaliser which looked all set to take the game into extra-time, with a tired looking Winteringham seemingly there for the taking.

Despite this, the home side continued to battle and on 85 minutes Moulds left the Burton keeper with no chance, sealing the win late on to break Burton hearts.

In division five Winteringham Reserves began their league campaign with a 3-3 draw with DSV Reserves.

Winteringham went 1-0 up as Dave Burton found himself in space in the penalty box before striking sweetly into the top corner.

A second goal came not long after the restart when Keil beat the keeper to a loose ball to tap into an empty net.

Winteringham's third goal soon followed from a corner as Lee Moulds out jumped his marker to head home.

With the game seemingly beyond them, DSV rallied and scored their first breakaway goal.

A second goal came soon after when a defensive mistake was pounced upon before an unlikely leveller.

The equaliser did, however, come in controversial fashion as the ball appeared to have been kicked from the keeper's hands in a goal mouth scramble.

Bright ideas help village kids

Scunthorpe Telegraph Friday 19th September 2008

BRIGHT sparks at schools in Winterton, Winteringham, Alkborough and Burton-Upon-Stather, will be 'lighting-up' the area this winter.

Thanks to a £2,000 donation of fluorescent jackets at the request of a concerned lorry driver Winterton and District Lions Club has donated more than 1,000 brightly coloured high visibility tabards to the primary schools.

The move came after a kind-hearted local lorry driver, who nearly collided with a group of school children walking from school in Barton-Upon-Humber two years ago, approached the Barton Lions club and asked for some action to be taken.

And yesterday, school children at Burton-Upon-Stather Primary School were presented with their jackets by the Winterton Lions, who held fundraising events to gather the funds to buy them.

Kevin Leisk, president of the Winterton Lions said: "To make kids of this age be a bit more aware of the road is important.

"People have got complacent over the years and there are more cars on the roads now, yet kids are not fully aware of the dangers so its important to put the emphasis back on safety and we hope these jackets will do that."

Schools in the Barton-Upon-Humber area have already received their fluorescent jackets and Glanford and Lindsey Lions also took up the initiative for schools in their areas.

School celebrating 80th birthday

by Hannah Scorer, Scunthorpe Telegraph Wednesday 17th September 2008

A school is to celebrate its 80th birthday with a through-the-years reunion.

Pupils, teachers and friends of Winteringham Primary past and present will come together for the party on Friday next week.

And anyone with a connection to the school has been offered an open invitation.

Celebrations have been timed to coincide with the opening of the school’s new extension, built to house the dining room.

A spokeswoman said: “The very special celebration marks the 80th year the school has been in its current building and we are celebrating this, along with the grand opening of a fantastic new extension.  “The new building will primarily be used as a dining room, but is a wonderful new facility that all sectors of the local community will be able to benefit from.

“We would really like to hear from anyone with a connection to the school and they would be welcome to come and join us.”

The party promises to be fun for all involved, with music, party food, face painting, a barbecue and more.

Lucky pupils get to down books and pens when the event kicks off in the early afternoon.

It is hoped the event will attract plenty of people who have been associated with the school over its 80-year history.

“All the children who currently attend the school will cut the opening ribbon on the new building,” said the spokeswoman.

“This will be followed by lots of fun and games, including a grand raffle, tombola, cake stall, goal-scoring, face painting and some exciting games for all ages to enjoy.

“There will be a barbecue, a Fairtrade shop and some great music from the school samba band.”

For those wishing to either take a trip down memory lane, or learn about the past, there will also be an exhibition of nostalgic photos.

All proceeds from the teas and coffees served during the afternoon will be donated to Macmillan as part of its Coffee Morning Campaign.

The party starts at 2:30pm on Friday, September 26.

Anyone wishing to attend should contact the school on (01724) 732324.
